Setting an outlandish goal and then achieving it, is not all that’s it’s cracked up to be.

It’s done all the time.

Whether it’s stuffing seventeen people in a VW Beetle or walking on the Moon, the real story is the process. Flying an airplane upside down over the Magnetic North Pole, just to see what the compass does in that configuration, is no exception.

It took Pat Epps and Richard Taylor, three annual attempts to achieve this goal. But, in the end, they did Roll the Pole.

Engine problems thwarted the first attempt and horrific Arctic weather killed the second. But perseverance prevailed in the third.

This Arctic journey quickly morphed into an eleven-year adventure in search of The Lost Squadron, the six P-38s and two B-17s lost on the Greenland icecap in 1942. And thus did Glacier Girl emerge.

Roll the Pole Richard Taylor 9780998752808 Books Reviews

An intriguing adventure story, reads like an exiting novel.
Great personal recounting of events, emotions & motivations of a quest not to mention an aviators perspective of how to stay alive. Luck or planning?
Great book. It's a compelling story that's extremely well written. I know Richard and Pat and was amazed how Richard captured the uniqueness of their individual personality and talents. Can't wait for the next installment in the arctic adventures of Klondike and Super.
Roll the pole is the quintessential story of adventure, self-realization, and determination wrapped in the Zen of aviation. Taylor’s pilot’s eye-view of his multi-year quest to achieve the goal of rolling a single engine aircraft above the north pole is an engaging narrative which explores the motivation and drive behind what some might consider frivolous, unnecessary, and even irresponsible adventure. However, by the end, you realize that these sort of adventures are what life is about, and that “Because it’s there” is really a good enough reason.

For readers that may be concerned that appreciation of the story might require a priori aviation knowledge, never fear. The treatment of the subject is written with such detail and clarity that no pilot’s license is required to share the cockpit with Taylor and Epps. Finally, Taylor closes with an epilogue hinting at a subsequent book on what this adventure would ultimately inspire. Looking forward with anticipation to what comes next…
As one of those people who are "uncomfortable flyers," I was initially curious as to why anyone would even want to think about "rolling the pole."
I had been familiar with the efforts of Mr Taylor and Mr Epps to salvage "The Lost Squadron" in Greenland, but had never heard of this (possibly madcap") North Pole adventure until someone suggested that I should read the book. Even though I still think they (like most good explorers) might be a little crazy to try to experience and understand the magnetic compass response directly above the North Pole, I admire their effort and greatly enjoyed reading about it. This book is a must for any aviation library and a must-read for anyone who enjoys a tale of two skilled pilots who accomplished their mission and lived to tell about it--this is a great read! Well done!
As an Atlantan for more than a decade now, stories (almost rumors) of two fellows who lead expeditions to Greenland to uncover a lost P38 have circulated around my circles of friends as long as I've been here. This book, basically the prequel to the P38 story, is an excellent tale of a pilot and his seemingly crazy desire to accomplish just. one. goal. The author/pilot, throughout the book, puts the reader "inside his head" and thus, inside the cockpit.
The reader might also learn a thing or two while reading how to navigate by "sunshots," the importance of intimately knowing your machine (something lost with today's modern automobiles), how long one can survive on nabs and Coke...
Overall this was an excellent read- I highly recommend it.
Loved the book. A true adventure. The second attempt to reach the pole left me concerned, anxious and uncomfortable even though I already knew the outcome. Living in the present is a gift we should all have. Looking forward to the next adventure.
