Interesting story. The action was pretty fun to read...sort of Lord-of-the-Rings-ish (in a good way). The characters had depth to them so that you cared what happened to them, even in the short amount of time you get to know them.
Pretty gripping for such a short story. It definitely has all the traces for the beginnings of a good fantasy novel. Love the details and the character development even though its so short.
Can't wait for more!
I'm generally not a fan of fantasy works, but this one kept me interested right from the beginning. It was one of those stories that you have a hard time putting down, because you really want to know what's going to happen next.
Despite being his first work, Kessler is able to bring the imagery of the story to life.
Characters 4/5 The characters are your typical fantasy fare, but had decent personality. I particularly like the creature. I feel it was well established and executed.
Setting 5/5 The setting is established well without feeling intrusive to the story. Normally, the setting pushes me away from fantasy, but I don't see the typical problems here.
Pacing 5/5 The pacing is fantastic. There's not much more that can be said.
Writing 4/5 I stumbled in a couple of places, but the writing is generally smooth and competently done.
Dialogue 4/5 The dialogue was a bit stiff at times, but worked well and added to the story.
Plot 4/5 Definitely enjoyable. If you enjoy fantasy monsters, I have no doubt you'll enjoy this story.
Overall 4.33/5 This story read well and was enjoyable. If you're a fan of R. A. Salvatore's work, I believe you'll find The Sparkwyrm an engaging experience.
An entertaining short story! Kessler is skilled in his descriptions and in developing his characters. Story leaves you wanting more. I look forward to more works from this author.
