An honest review would be that this book has a bit of everyone's story, Waiting for answers and the what was coming next kept me on edge the whole time. I have to say that I absolutely loved it! It was my first book by this writer and it did not disappoint me.I loved the tangents that the writer went off to, it is hard to put this book down once you start reading. They pull you in and you cry with them and laugh with them and hope with them and curse with them and …. You get the picture…
It is a book about how our past defines our future, how we create copying mechanism that might jeopardize our path to fulfillment. For anyone whose past has helped shaped their future, Colors is bound to have a resonating effect on your mind and you will want more :)

Colours in the Spectrum Jayant Swamy Books Reviews
synesthesia- a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.
That's what wiki says.
Basically, you 'see' or associate people, or things with colour, involuntarily.
I won this book off of Goodreads , which was exciting enough for me as I've never won ANYTHING in my life. Ever.
Although this book mentions synesthesia, it is just a small part of what the book is about.
In my opinion, many Indian authors have a predilection to make their stories too 'filmy' or Bollywood-ish, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this story to be a breath of fresh air.
I felt a myriad of emotions while reading this book, from one extreme to another, for the same character! The events in this book occur in a span of about 15 years, flitting back and forth between the past and the present. It revolves around five friends Karan- the happy-go-lucky guy, Indu- the popular, I'm beautiful-and-I-know-it girl, Arjun- the soft-spoken, doesn't take anything for granted guy, Aarti- the smart, kind-hearted, voracious reader, and Danny- the recluse.
The story is told from Karan's point of view, and starts off with his life in Los Angeles, America.
As you read, you go through a range of emotions with the characters, which is always a good sign of a good book. What I really like about the book is that the characterization is not completely black or white. Each have their own good points and shortcomings, as real people do.
This is a really good debut novel by the author, and although the dialogues do seem a bit contrived at certain occasions, it can easily be overlooked.
The story concerning a journey which begins at the early adulthood life of Karan, Indu, Aarti, Arjun and the other guy-Danny made this book pretty 'colourful' and fun to read. It converges over their mutual explorations, the sorrows and joys as they take to the streets of Bangalore on their way to Xavier's junior college in the 80's. Karan is the central node in this book. I could relate with a lot of their experiences as the protagonists stepped through the space-time of India more than three decades ago. It took me a while to follow the God-given gift of the x-men like main character's ability to recognize peoples moods in colors. It was baffling to understand the idea, but i guess it is real and some are truly gifted by this esoteric power. The junior college English teacher as a glue that held the entire junior college batch together brought a smile while reading as I had the very same experience in my senior high school/junior-college years. There were sections of the book that filled me with intrigue and some awe especially the one about Karan trying to know what was hidden in his dad's heart. The book has a hook to the ancient Indian Sanskrit epic of Mahabharatha. In the Mahabharatha, Karna happened to be complex and a key character whose fate apparently decides the future of mankind. So reading this book I was relieved to note that Karna was characterized as a hero and not a villain.
I was looking for an easy read after having been off books for a few months. I chanced upon this book on our bedroom bookshelf. I picked it up on a Friday evening and finished reading it by Sunday night. The pace of reading took me back to my childhood days when I was a voracious reader. It is a tribute to the author, especially with his maiden novel, that he was able to keep me hooked from start to finish. My first reaction after putting down the book was "when is the sequel coming out?". The book leaves you hungry for more hence my reaction.
The novel is primarily set in Bangalore, India in the 70s. Jayant seems to have drawn from the Hindu Mythology while building the character of the main protagonist Karan. The author doesn't leave any loose ends and expertly weaves the story line through the lives of the five characters, in the past-present format. By the end, the reader has enough material to form opinions of each of these characters. The vivid descriptions in the novel make it easy for one to imagine the setting. Also, I could relate to the Bollywood song references that Jayant scattered around in the book.
There are parts in the novel where the author dwells in detail about psychological issues that I could have done without. The flow of the novel is fast until you reach this portion. No doubt, the author seems to have some knowledge about this topic and was possibly using this podium to convey a message. Oh Well!
Overall, I would highly recommend this book.I look forward to Jayant's next offering.
