I enjoyed myself more than I thought I would, but sadly almost missed my chance because of a really hateful sounding review who judged the h B.J. very harshly.... B.J. was a lot of things, some good and some maybe bad ( I guess) ( but then aren't we all) but unlike the hateful reviewer ,I saw NOTHING to indicate ( as sorry white trailer trash ) description they vilified poor B.J. with.... B.J. grew up the only female in a house full of men,a father and 3 brothers,Yes more Roseanne per say than white bread but while uncouth and a little lazy ( her brothers NOT B.J. ) that didn't make her or them trash necessarily and certainly NOT HER!!! Ok,did she come bit strong to Grady that night ? Aaaaaa Yeah! But I got it,sure she did some not all or maybe even most of us could have done ( could I have ? Maybe,I know I've had to push someone I loved at times even when I honestly didn't want to... But it WAS needed, just like it was here ,GRADY NEEDED THAT PUSH!! After and even some during Grady admits if only to himself he NEEDED to be pushed, two and a 1/2 years of Hard Hurting grieving was taking its toll on him mentally, emotionally and you could see even physically, some hing HAD to give... Given by someone who'd loved and lusted for him for over 1/2 her life ( 12 - 27) and just couldn't bear to see him hurt any more, someone who loved him enough to risk rejection and give him the push he soo desperately wanted that once she pushed him far enough he enthusiastically took over and pushed her back,1st up against a door and then again on the floor... Grady wasn't EVER forced into sex by her,Hell the only thing pushed him out and away for as long as he did was not being able to control survivors type guilt of moving on w/someone else... Believe you me he definitely enjoyed his time w/B.J. ,coz the next day his thoughts were only either guilt of moving on,guilt for how he walked out on B.J. thoughts of tying her to his bed or any bed and sexing her til neither walk straight or at all ;) and if B.J. had been proud of the way she'd pushed him and patted herself on the back or something that might have been different but she was torn as well, she'd FINALLY gotten to be w/the man she'd loved and lusted for over 1/2 her life but she was eaten up over the thought of hurting him and ready to apologize til the cows came home if that had have been what Grady needed... I loved her irreverent tom boy ways but she had an uber sweet, kind and tender, tense heart and I HATED how both Grady and his father pushed and coerced into a marriage she wasn't even she she wanted... Like us all she wanted to be wanted and loved for herself not just the baby she carried.... While Grady's father treated her like the white trash that reviewer called her and blackmailing her like some awful soap opera villain while Grady only thinks of what he wants and needs ( her body to have sex w/and the child in her body) not feeling like she deserves anything special in a ring or a wedding because he's "not in love w/her" and just moves her into her dead wife's home and is confused later that she feels unloved and basically unwanted while she's lost her backbone trying to pleas him and everyone else... No,no wealthy or not it was Grady and his father who acted trashy out of anyone mentioned, her lazy family not with standing... B.J. Tried soo hard to please everyone she almost lost herself in the process ,that how trashy ppl act/behave,just watch most any quote "reality tv" and see, "trashy ppl" are selfish, self absorbed, entitled and think only of themselves and what they want and don't care who they hurt to get it,also usually petty, vain and spoiled and no color, race or religion or Financial background is excluded... Soo my in,y complaints are how Thanks to a nasty close minded reviewer I almost missed a really good story and that as strong as B.J. Seemed to be she for a good chunk of the story lost her backbone and almost lost herself... The Trouble With Tomboys Linda Kage 9781601547903 Books Reviews
You know when you find an author whose stories just click with you? That’s the way I feel about Kage’s work. After reading her other story about this family, I literally couldn’t wait to find out more. Finding ‘The Trouble with Tomboys’ was much more than what I thought it would be. The dialogue and character development is strong and moves the story along very well.
Considering that I read the follow up (A Fallow Heart) to this story first, I was very, very curious how Kage made it work. I'll tell ya how - she's a good storyteller. Before I go on, this is not a series – not that I could find evidence of anyway – and can be read independently of each other. Now back to the good stuff.
Raised in a house full of men, pilot B.J. Gilmore is the tomboy of Tommy Creek but that’s all good because she knows it and she’s fine with it. Grady Rawlings is the oldest son of the richest man in town and still works for the family business - he’s a good son and he’s a good worker. On one of his overnight business trips to Houston, Grady hires B.J.’s company to fly him there.
While in Houston, B.J. and Grady both drink a little too much at dinner. Oh geez, this doesn’t bode well for B.J. because she’s already spent too much time in the presence of her childhood and adulthood crush and she just can’t stand that he’s so unhappy. So what can a girl who’s always been crazy for the boy do? Help get him out of his funk of course. She’s already fed him, so that leaves just one more thing to do. I felt bad - for like a nano-second - for the brooding Grady because he couldn’t see B.J. as anything other than the tomboy that the town had relegated her to be.
I can’t say enough how much I liked this story, not as much as A Fallow Heart, but it was close. B.J. was a great character. She’s got spunk, heart, intelligence, humor, and self-confidence which made for a delightful read. Although she’s clearly been around way too many men, she’s still got some feminine traits about her – there’s a scene when she’s trying to ‘girl up her wardrobe’ with some sexy lingerie for her man...the ensuing chase was awesome.
A good portrayal of being manly without sacrificing your caring side, Grady got a gentle soul and a forgiving heart and is absolutely perfect for B.J. After losing his wife a few years back, he’s been in a deep depression and folks are still walking around on eggshells because he carries his grief like a cloak. But as fate would have it, B.J. is perfect for him because she would not let him feel sorry for himself and as a healing balm B.J.'s was so seemingly self assured, Grady could speak of his dead wife without repercussions. Of all, that was probably my favorite thing about their story. B.J. never denied Grady his right to have memories of this first wife nor dissuade him from speaking of her. This story reminds us that when given a second chance, grab it, hold on and don't let go because it might the best thing you never thought could happen to you.
I highly recommend this if you like your heroine funny yet strong and your hero strong with a heart full of gold. Last but not least - the sexy times with these two was hmmm hmmm good. I’m officially on the hunt for more of Kage’s work.
Happy Reading folks!

Very enjoyable read from start to finish. Refreshing change to have a heroine be a total card playin, cigar smoking, tomboy who flies her own plane for a living. B.J. Gilmore grew up in the small town of Tommy Creek, Texas. She lived her life the way she’s wanted to live it and could give a flyin fig what anyone thinks of her..
Her family runs a charter plane business and her latest job has her flying Grady Rawlings to Houston. B.J. has known Grady all her life and he was married to the woman that baby sit her and her brothers when she was growing up. Two and half years ago Grady’s wife and baby died during child birth and he’s been in a depression ever since and the town hasn’t help any by treating him like he will break. B.J. has no such problem in talking about his dead wife to him nor in telling him it time to get over it and move on. Grady doesn’t quite know how to take this woman who tells it like it is. At first he’s offended that she would get on his case about his dead wife but after a heated altercation these two have a lust filled moment that ends up with her pregnant.
I really liked B.J. She was a hoot to read and had you laughing most of the time. Grady’s journey from mourning to coming back to life was also very well written. This was a great story of two people who couldn’t be more opposite who ended up being exactly what the other needed.
